Katrina sent me this dress quite some time ago. I am not sure why it took so long. Maybe it was the 27 feet of snow that has fallen on this winter, or the renovation I am doing on the house, or the whatever. Those are all excuses. Art should always come first. I think it always does in my head but things like my basement flooding like it is right now get in the way. I guess you just have to say screw it I am making art instead of trying to build a dike.
The dress is hand and machine embroidered with a pink satin taffeta sewn into the back. I pinned the taffeta onto the inside of the dress and then cut pieces of the dress away as I finished embroidering in areas. For a long time while I was making it I didn’t like it but I guess that just reinforces that I should always trust my passion. The end result is really hot and more interesting than my shirt.
The sporozoan on my shirt is really big and I think that gives it more impact but Katrina’s dress is subtle and far more suggestive.

the dress is amazing and i am wearing it for the first time, since transformed, today.
first of all, i have to say, it’s scary how good it looks on you.
I was really surprised at the way that you cut away the fabric to let the taffeta through, it’s a detail of the construction that i think is really beautiful and interesting: the sporozoan becomes integrated rather than something applied on top.
perhaps it is smaller than the one on your shirt, however i think it is undeniably striking and i know that people are going to ask me about it every time i wear it.
