RobRoy Chalmers: Artist
RobRoy Chalmers' career is defined by a deep exploration of form and vision, bridging the tangible world with the realms of imagination. His mastery of diverse mediums, including drawing, painting, printmaking, and sculpture, serves as a foundation for creating immersive experiences that invite viewers to explore the "liminal space" between reality and the subconscious.

Recent and Upcoming Exhibitions:
Spring 2025 will feature Chalmers' work in a diverse range of exhibitions, including the CUT/FOLD/PRESS: National Paper Arts Exhibition at Craft Alliance in St. Louis, curated by artist and critic Buzz Spector; Socha Arts in Olympia, WA; and The Brick Lane Gallery in London, UK.
In 2023 and 2024, following a post-COVID reemergence, his work was showcased at the Elevation Project in Seattle, the Superfine Art Fair in New York City, and Alki Arts in Seattle.
His recent exhibition history also reflects a sustained presence in the Seattle art scene, with multiple past shows at Slip Gallery, Sidereal Gallery, BaseCamp Studios, Swing Gallery, and The Shooting Gallery
National and International Presence:
From the 1990s onward, Chalmers has exhibited nationally and internationally, with venues ranging from the Rochester Contemporary Arts Center and the Printmaking Center of NJ. His exhibitions include various New York City galleries and SXSW, where in 2011 he presented his still growing conceptual 'Sporozoan Swarm.'
His international exhibitions also include the Art Monaco Art Fair in Monte Carlo and The Brick Lane Gallery in London.
Early Career:
Notable early exhibitions include shows at Denise Bibro Gallery in New York City, International Print Center NY, and the Davidson and Artist Trust Galleries in Seattle.
Early Career Collaborations:
Early in his career, Chalmers had the opportunity to work and show alongside renowned artists Chuck Close, Linda Schrank, Antonio Martorell, Kiki Smith, and Michael Knigin. These experiences significantly shaped his vision of the contemporary art world, fostering his belief in the necessity of diverse and individual voices, the importance of personal artistic vision, and the pursuit of authentic expression over all.
Additionally Chalmers demonstrated an early engagement with digital media at the web's beginnings, notably collaborating on the 'Achromatone 1.0' project for which he presented at Museums and the Web in 2001.
Teaching, Residencies, Mentorship, and Career Collaborations:
Alongside his exhibition work, Chalmers has dedicated himself to nurturing artistic talent, expanding his own artistic knowledge, and collaborating with established artists.
Pratt Institute Faculty:
From 2002 to 2006, Chalmers served as faculty at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn, NY, teaching Printmaking, Drawing, and Art Theory. This period solidified his commitment to art education and the development of emerging artists.
His teaching practice is rooted in the belief of embracing the dynamic and evolving ways of creative expression; focusing on guiding students to cultivate their individual artistic voices, encouraging them to explore how their personal aptitudes inform their choice of medium and the fulfillment of their conceptual intent.
Studio Camnitzer Residency:
In 1991, Chalmers participated in a residency at Studio Camnitzer in Valdottavo, Italy, where he studied under the guidance of David Finkbeiner and Luis Camnitzer. This formative experience significantly influenced his artistic approach and conceptual understanding of printmaking and book arts.
Printmaker Collaboration:
Currently, Chalmers collaborates with Seattle area master printmaker Sheila Coppola, working in conjunction to print a suite of intaglio prints entitled ‘The Sporozoan Cavities’. Conceived and etched in the 1990s, this collaboration represents the culmination of a years-long passion and dedicated work to realize and complete this suite of prints.
